John 5:19

Observation

Jesus did nothing of His own choosing. He only did what He saw the Father do. Anything and everything the Father does the Son does also.

Application

I am completely dependent on God to show me how to do what pleases Him. The only way I will know what to do is by watching Him. How can I do what I see Him do if I do not watch Him? I observe the Father’s actions in Jesus. I must keep my eyes on Him and then do what I see Him doing.

Prayer

Father God, thank You for the example of Jesus Christ. Thank you for revealing a key to effective ministry – doing what I see you do. I am so glad that to see Him is to see you. Give me eyes to see the real You in the Scriptures. Help me to see what you are doing today. Grant me the courage and boldness to do what I see you doing. I give you all glory, honour and praise, in Jesus’ matchless name, Amen.

There are three times in Jesus’ life that we know He shed tears.

Lazarus tomb—These were tears for a family, a friend who had entered eternity prematurely. We need to shed tears for our family members who are not in the “ark.”

Jerusalem—Jesus stood on the Mount of Olives in Luke 19 and wept over Jerusalem because she missed her “day of visitation.” These were tears for a city and all of us should be moved to tears for the lost condition of the city we are giving our lives to reach.

Gethsemane—Paul reflected in Hebrews of how Christ offered up “loud crying and tears.” This was probably His three hours in Gethsemane where he prayed for the world. With over five billion people we know are lost around the world, we should be moved at the thought of all of these entering the horror of the lake of fire.

When is the last time you cried?

A Seasoned Journalist Chases Down the Biggest Story in History The Project: Determine if there’s credible evidence that Jesus of Nazareth really is the Son of God. The Reporter: Lee Strobel, educated at Yale Law School, award-winning former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune—with a background of atheism. The Experts: A dozen scholars, with doctorates from Cambridge, Princeton, Brandeis, and other top-flight institutions, who are recognized authorities on Jesus. The Story: Retracing his own spiritual journey, Strobel cross-examines the experts with tough, point-blank questions: How reliable is the New Testament? Does evidence exist for Jesus outside the Bible? Is there any reason to believe the resurrection was an actual historical event? . . .

This remarkable book reads like a captivating, fast-paced novel. But it’s not fiction. It’s a riveting quest for the truth about history’s most compelling figure. What will your verdict be in The Case for Christ

I am trying here to prevent anyone from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a greeat moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic…or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.
